People with BDD often spend hours a day checking, grooming, or comparing their appearance to others, and may also engage in compulsive behaviors such as skin picking, seeking cosmetic procedures, or avoiding social situations. #### BDD can affect individuals of any gender, age, or cultural background and may lead to significant impairment in social, occupational, and personal functioning. It is often associated with depression, anxiety, and suicidal ideation. #### Treatment for BDD typically involves a combination of psychotherapy, medication, and support from family and friends. Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) has shown to be effective in treating BDD, as it helps individuals learn to challenge and change their negative beliefs and thoughts about their appearance. Medications such as antidepressants may also be prescribed to alleviate symptoms of depression and anxiety. #### Understanding Body Image Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD): At WD Recovery and Wellness Center, we believe that knowledge is the first step towards recovery. In and of itself the practice of an eating disorders and addictions could also be considered self-harming behavior. Self-harm is defined as the act of causing self-injury to one’s own body. Self-harm is also referred to as self-injury, self-abuse, self-inflicted violence, self-mutilation and para-suicide. Similar to eating disordered behavior and addictions, the self-harming behavior is participated in to help the individual cope with, take control of, block out and release unwanted feelings and emotions. The most common act of self-harm is cutting. Self-harming individuals usually inflict injury on their wrists, upper arms and inner thighs. The location of body marking is often in a place that can be hidden to avoid detection by others. Other forms of self –harming behavior include: [/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][vc_row_inner css=".vc_custom_1764055331128{background-position: center !important;background-repeat: no-repeat !important;background-size: cover !important;}"][vc_column_inner width="1/6"][/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width="2/3"][vc_column_text] - ### Cutting - ### Burning - ### Scratching - ### Hair pulling - ### Hitting - ### Picking - ### Branding - ### Biting - ### Self-poisoning - ### Wound interference [/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=".vc_custom_1675415643122{padding-top: 20px !important;padding-right: 20px !important;padding-bottom: 20px !important;padding-left: 20px !important;}"] #### Although individuals who self-harm may have suicidal thoughts, the act in itself is not intended as a form of suicide but rather as a means of dealing with uncomfortable emotions. In essence, self-harming behavior is a dysfunctional coping mechanism. Self-injury’s goal is to help the individual dissociate from the immediate tension they are experiencing. Self-harmers speak about feeling overwhelmed with uncontrollable emotional thoughts and beliefs that are excessively painful. Unable to face this dire pain, they channel the uncontrollable pain into a different type of pain. One that although is still painful, seems to them understandable and more importantly, controllable. Through self-harming behavior, the real feelings are temporarily avoided and replaced by the new distracting pain. The pain from self-harming, although it hurts, is a familiar pain and not mysterious and scary like the original emotions and feelings. Some individuals who self-harm describe overall feelings of numbness and not belonging. For them the act of seeing their own blood when they self-harm helps them to feel alive and not dead inside, confirming their existence. Self-harming can also serve as a form of self-punishment for those who feel an inner sense of shame and guilt. Besides the obvious physical problems that self-harming causes, the problem with self-harming behavior is that the original pain is only temporarily deflected and never addressed. [/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=".vc_custom_1675414798917{padding-top: 20px !important;padding-right: 20px !important;padding-bottom: 20px !important;padding-left: 20px !important;}"] #### Since the original issues have only been avoided, the unknown frightening pain returns and even intensifies sending the self-harmer back into the vicious cycle of self-abuse. There can also be an almost addictive quality to self-harming. For some the act releases endorphins, the body’s natural defense to pain, into the bloodstream causing an almost numbing or pleasurable experience. [/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=".vc_custom_1675415649498{padding-top: 20px !important;padding-right: 20px !important;padding-bottom: 20px !important;padding-left: 20px !important;}"] #### Most individuals who self-harm tend to be hard on themselves, perfectionists, have difficulty with expressing themselves and dislike their bodies. It is difficult for someone who self-harms to admit to someone about their self-injury because of the guilt and shame they feel. Self-harmers usually keep the behavior secret and feel like they are “crazy” and inherently bad. These individuals are reticent to ask for help because they are fearful that because they self-harm, they may be forced into a locked ward and held against their will. In actuality, self-harmers are sane individuals who have fallen into a maladaptive coping style to address their unbearable emotional pain. Anger is a fundamental and safe core emotion of a child or adult survivor’s response to trauma because of the betrayal and losing basic trust. Anger is a core feature of the trauma survival response in men and women. Therefore, the anger is a safe and a less vulnerable feeling that can be expressed as an emotion helping individual's cope with vulnerable and fearful situations. #### WD recovery and Wellness Center explains how anger and trauma are connected to an individual's natural survival instinct. When an individual is initially confronted with a threat, anger is a normal response which covers over you. Childhood abuse is a terrorizing situation that often becomes a repeated situation. Anger is a normal response to situations of terror, situations that seem unfair, and the feelings of "feeling out of control". [/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][vc_row_inner css=".vc_custom_1675671810774{background-position: center !important;background-repeat: no-repeat !important;background-size: cover !important;}"][vc_column_inner width="1/6"][/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width="2/3"][vc_column_text] #### Feelings become perceived as vulnerable. The vulnerable feelings need protection. Vulnerable situations can be perceived as "threats" becoming "fixed with automatic responses" in persons with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. #### Individuals, who have Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) often, describe feeling an increased internal activation. The anger can become “fixed or stuck” as the normal level of arousal can intensify the actual psychological, emotional and physical experience of anger. The arousal often can cause a men and women with PTSD to feel constantly on-edge, hyped-up, or irritable and can cause individuals to be more easily provoked. It is common for traumatized individuals to actually seek out situations that require them to stay alert and defend off actual or potential danger. #### Again, individuals often use alcohol and drugs, food, exercise, sex, gambling, and self-harm to reduce and dispel overall internal tension and arousal – "to feel better". The physical or sexual traumatic event interferers with an individual’s ability to self-regulate emotions, which leads to frequent episodes of labile or out-of-control emotions of anger and rage. Most eating disordered individuals have used their eating disorder as non-verbal communication about how they feel. Eating disordered individuals attach emotions to food, and this allows them to gain a sense of control over their lives. This attachment of emotions to food allows a person with an eating disorder to eat more food, binge, purge, and/or restrict to hide and suppress feelings. The emotions often relate the identity of the feelings to the past. The eating disorder protects the individual as a self-regulating system by covering up, distorting, and displacing vulnerable feelings onto physical body parts as sensations by inhibiting or pushing away painful emotional expression. The self-system of an individual uses the eating disorder to self-soothe in response to emotional pain in the form of physical sensations. The individuals with an eating disorder romanticize physical ailments and blame the food for making them fat. [/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=".vc_custom_1675415713592{padding-top: 20px !important;padding-right: 20px !important;padding-bottom: 20px !important;padding-left: 20px !important;}"] ### Anorexia Nervosa #### Anorexia nervosa is mainly characterized by the restriction of food and the refusal to maintain a minimal normal body weight. Anorexics are characterized by behaviors that represent unhealthy and inappropriate ways to prevent and compensate for perceived or imagined weight gain. The anorexic is characterized by a refusal to maintain at least a minimum of 85% of ideal body weight based on age-appropriate height and weight. Individuals with anorexia dramatically reduce their food intake to below the number of calories required to maintain their ideal body weight. Anorexia literally means “a loss of appetite” and can be characterized by self-induced starvation, a relentless drive for thinness, and a morbid fear of becoming fat. #### Anorexic individuals may be coping through restricting and purging behaviors. Individuals with the restricting subtype of anorexia typically consume 300–500 calories per day with 0 grams of fat. After the anorexic individual consumes these 300–500 calories, he or she may compensate for the consumed calories by engaging in a compulsive and relentlessly overactive cycle of exercise. In the purging anorexic, the individual alternately attempts to diet rigorously and binge intermittently, while engaging in compensatory purging behavior to compensate for consuming unwanted calories. For these individuals, the restriction of food intake may relieve the psychological stress associated with other factors such as sexual assault, parents’ divorce, incest, and school bullying. [/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=".vc_custom_1675415709196{padding-top: 20px !important;padding-right: 20px !important;padding-bottom: 20px !important;padding-left: 20px !important;}"] ### Bulimia Nervosa #### Bulimia nervosa sufferers, sometimes called “Bulimics,” are often caught in a destructive binge-purge cycle. The bulimic individual feels out of control and experiences panic and mental angst related to the severe desire for thinness and a fear of fatness. As a result, compensatory purging behaviors occur. Bulimia nervosa is characterized by engagement in binge-purge cycles that include eating large amounts of food (i.e., binging). The binging is followed by an attempt to force vomiting or by abusing laxatives (i.e., purging); diabetics not taking insulin; use of laxatives, diuretics, diet pills; ipecac; chew-spitting; or exercise to compensate for the real or imagined weight gain caused by the calorie-laden binged food. For individuals with bulimia nervosa, the purging behavior can reduce stress. Bulimia nervosa is a failed attempt at anorexia, although individuals with bulimia share the goal of achieving thinness. Individuals with bulimia nervosa may experience many failed attempts at mini-starvation behaviors and evoke feelings of severe hunger that cause binging on calorie-laden food only to face severe conflict and anxiety. [/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=".vc_custom_1674904035363{padding-top: 20px !important;padding-right: 20px !important;padding-bottom: 20px !important;padding-left: 20px !important;}"] ### Compulsive Overeating #### Compulsive overeaters are often locked into a fearful cycle of binging and depressive symptoms with food such that control over their feelings, bodies, and families are an essential part of the cycle of binge eating and depression. Compulsive eaters or “binge eaters” often use food as a self-regulating coping mechanism to deal with unwanted feelings. Eating temporarily distracts them from these feelings, but it is often shadowed by feelings of guilt, horrid shame, disgust, and sadness. Binge eating occurs in secret and often at night. [/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=".vc_custom_1675415700379{padding-top: 20px !important;padding-right: 20px !important;padding-bottom: 20px !important;padding-left: 20px !important;}"] ### Causes of Eating Disorders #### Eating disorders, Alcohol use and Substance are complex diseases and not just a condition that can be treated with willpower. They meet the definition of a disease because like other diseases they have a particular destructive process for an individual, with a specific cause (that cause can be either known or unknown), and display characteristic symptoms. All eating disorders, Alcohol, and substance use disorders are primary diseases and not the secondary result of some other disorder. They are chronic conditions with an identifiable progression and predictable symptoms. Eating disorders, Alcohol Use, substance use disorders arise out of the combination of genetic, sociological, and psychological factors. The cravings, along with compulsive alcohol seeking and use that persist despite devastating consequences. Most addictive alcohol behavior is not related to either physical tolerance or exposure to triggers. People commonly use alcohol compulsively in reaction to stress. Alcohol Addiction is when you drink alcohol that can be pleasurable but the continuation of your drinking which becomes compulsive interfering with daily responsibilities such as work, relationships, and your health. Most people with an alcohol addiction may not be aware that their behavior is out of control. #### WD Recovery and Wellness Center understands how the path to alcohol addiction begins with the thoughts to drink alcohol so you can quiet or numb your brain “feeling normal” or ok. The alcohol numbs the bad images or feelings from past experiences so the post traumatic images and associated feelings are forgotten, not seen or felt, or favorable emotions come from the alcohol to feel more intense. Most alcohol use becomes a Band-Aid that covers up all the pain, painful images, and abuse and over time individuals lose the ability to choose not to drink and think, "this is the way it is and I am broken." Developed by Dr. Richard Schwartz, IFS is based on the idea that we all have multiple parts within us, each with their own thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. By getting to know and work with these parts, we can heal from emotional wounds and transform our inner world. #### At WD Recovery and Wellness Center we can help you improve your mental and emotional well-being. Whether you're struggling with anxiety, depression, trauma, or other issues, IFS can provide a powerful tool for healing and growth. [/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][vc_row_inner css=".vc_custom_1764054318426{background-position: 0 0 !important;background-repeat: no-repeat !important;}"][vc_column_inner width="1/6"][/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width="2/3"][vc_column_text css=".vc_custom_1685758767877{margin-top: 20px !important;}"] #### All parts are welcome: In IFS, every part of you is considered valuable and has a positive intent. Even the parts that you may consider negative, such as anger or anxiety, are seen as protective parts that are trying to keep you safe. By acknowledging and accepting all your parts, you can create a sense of inner harmony and self-compassion. #### The Self is the leader: The Self is the central core of your being, the part that is wise, compassionate, and connected to something greater than yourself. In IFS, the goal is to help you access your Self and let it lead the way in working with your other parts. By doing so, you can create a sense of inner calm and clarity that allows you to make choices that align with your deepest values. #### Parts can transform: While every part has a positive intent, some parts may have adopted harmful patterns or beliefs that are no longer serving you. Through IFS, you can work with these parts to help them release old patterns and transform into healthier versions of themselves. This can lead to a greater sense of inner peace and freedom. #### Healing from trauma: Trauma can cause parts of ourselves to become fragmented or stuck in painful memories. IFS can help you access and work with these parts in a gentle and supportive way, allowing you to release the trauma and move forward in your life. #### Managing emotions: Emotions such as anxiety, anger, and depression can be overwhelming and difficult to manage. IFS can help you understand and work with these emotions in a way that promotes self-awareness and self-compassion. #### Improving relationships: Our parts can affect how we relate to others, often causing conflict or difficulty in our relationships. Through IFS, you can learn to understand and communicate with your parts in a way that promotes healthy relationships. #### Internal Family Systems Therapy is a powerful approach that can help you transform your inner world and improve your overall well-being. By getting to know and work with the different parts of yourself, you can create a sense of inner harmony, self-awareness, and self-compassion. Diabetes is a disorder that is a result of the pancreas not producing enough insulin or the body not being able to effectively use the insulin produced. The prevalence of eating disorders among insulin-dependent diabetics is estimated to be two to six times higher than in the general population. Up to 25% of females with insulin-dependent diabetes may have a diagnosable eating disorder. Although diabetes has not been shown to cause eating disorders, the condition may increase the risk of developing them. #### The connection between eating disorders and diabetes may be a result of both disorders sharing some common traits and paths. To begin with, for many diabetics, the onset of diabetes is accompanied by an initial weight loss, which is often how the disorder is first recognized. This initial weight loss can be perceived as rewarding and become something the diabetic does not want to give up. Following diagnosis, the individual is started on insulin treatment, which often causes weight gain for the diabetic. This resultant weight gain may exacerbate any concerns about body image and cause anxiety for the newly diagnosed diabetic. Also complicating the situation are the dietary constraints imposed on diabetics. Both eating disorders and diabetes encourage individuals to pay accentuated attention to what they eat and weigh. Foods for individuals with an eating disorder and diabetes are no longer viewed as just for nutrition, but often gain the monikers of “forbidden” or “dangerous”. The obsessive pursuit of gaining control of food can become central for both diabetics and eating-disordered individuals. This struggle to maintain control can become the introduction to developing an eating disorder for a diabetic. The issue of control is of special importance for adolescent diabetics. Like all teenagers, adolescent diabetics strive for independence but besides the regular teen issues, adolescent diabetics must also grapple with someone or something else posing control over their food intake. Through the practice of an eating disorder, eating-disordered diabetics may feel they have regained some of the lost control. #### When a diabetic has an eating disorder, they often fall into the dangerous behaviors of dieting, restricting, and bingeing. The most dangerous practice is the misuse of their insulin. To avoid weight gain, some diabetics with eating disorders underuse their insulin, causing their blood sugar to rise and spill into their urine. The accompanied weight loss is the result of the body’s tissues being dissolved. Medical complications as a result of improper use of insulin or bingeing for diabetics with eating disorders include kidney failure, heart disease, blood circulation difficulties, and eyesight damage. Diabetics with eating disorders have a threefold risk of retinopathy (permanent damage to the retina of the eye). Diagnosing an eating disorder in a diabetic can be extremely difficult, even for professionals. The dietary concerns of diabetes can easily mask eating-disordered behavior. It is often hard to tell if the behaviors are symptoms of an eating disorder or just careful dietary management of diabetes. When confronted, eating-disordered diabetics often claim that they are just practicing good dietary control. One tale-tell sign of trouble is poorly controlled blood sugars for unexplained reasons. #### WD Recovery and Wellness Center understands the nuances and difficulties of diabetes complicated with an eating disorder and has put together a program that can address an eating-disordered diabetic’s specific needs. In the past, the course of treatment for a diabetic was one of a prescribed restrictive diet and a rigid approach to regulation and management. WD Recovery and Wellness Center understands this approach can be counterproductive and even lead a diabetic towards bingeing, restricting, and even misuse of insulin. Instead, we work with eating disorder diabetic individuals towards normalizing their eating and tailoring their insulin to their food plan. It is not uncommon for a diabetic individual to lower the amount of insulin or move from injections to oral medication, once they are in recovery from their eating disorder. --- # Creative Expression Source: https://wdrecoverycenters.com/creative-expression/ #### Creative therapies are an integral component of WD Recovery and Wellness Centers' treatment. For many individuals, the spoken word may not be enough to completely express what they have been experiencing. Fear of not being understood or reluctance to speak what has been viewed as unspeakable can damper self-exploration. Through creative therapies, individuals are provided an opportunity for expression, explanation, and resolution in a non-verbal format. In addition, creative therapies often open up a window to awareness and insight into areas that the individual may not already understand. Through different mediums such as art, dance, music, movement, role-playing, and recreation, our clients experience alternate methods of self-expression in a safe and non-confrontational manner. ![](https://wdeatingdisorders.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/blog-creative-expression-1.jpg) ### "Why I Want Recovery”I want life, not this deaththat I have lived inI want peace, and not anxietyI want health and strength, not weakening and decayI want to receive what I am given, and not regurgitatebe it food, friends, complimentsgifts or gaiety ![](https://wdeatingdisorders.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/blog-creative-expression-2.jpg) ### I want to nourish my bodyand nourish my soulI want to love myselfso that others I can loveI want to clearly see myselfso the world I can make outI want to tell the truthand stop living in this lieI want to stand up for myselfand not to compromise ![](https://wdeatingdisorders.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/blog-creative-expression-3.jpg) ### I want to feel to dream, to tryand not hold back, restrictand dieNo longer wish I to denymyself the chance to learnto flyI want to be free just to be meto comprehend serenityThat's why I want recovery --- # Alcohol Friend Source: https://wdrecoverycenters.com/alcohol-friend/ ![](https://wdeatingdisorders.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/blog-alcohol-friend.jpg) #### Hello Old Friend, #### I’ve come to visit once again. I love to see you suffer, mentally, physically, spiritually, and socially. I want to make you restless so you can never relax! I want you to be nervous and jumpy and anxious. I want to make you agitated and irritable, so everything and everybody makes you uncomfortable. I want you to be confused and depressed so that you can’t think clearly or positively. I want you to hate everything – especially YOURSELF, I want you to feel guilty and remorseful for the things that you have done in the past and that you’ll never be able to let go of. #### I want to make you angry and hateful toward the world for the way things are. I want you to feel sorry for yourself and blame everything but your alcoholism for the way things are. I want you to be deceitful, and untrustworthy, and to manipulate and con as many people as possible. I want to make you fearful and paranoid. I want you to be fearful and paranoid for no reason at all. I want you to wake up all hours of the night and scream for me! I’m even in your dreams! #### I want to be the first thing you wake up to in the morning and the last thing you touch before you black out. I would rather kill you, but I’ll be happy to put you back in the hospital, another institution, or jail. But you know that I’ll be waiting for you when you get out. I love to watch you slowly going insane. I love to see the physical damage that I’m causing you. I can’t help but sneer and chuckle when you shiver and shake. When you freeze and sweat at the same time, and when you wake with your sheets and blankets soaking wet. It’s amusing to watch you make love to the toilet bowl…heaving and retching and not able to hold me down. It’s amazing how much you sacrifice for me. #### The countless jobs you’ve sacrificed for me. All the friends you deeply cared for – you gave up for me, and what’s more the ones you turned against yourself because of your inexcusable actions – I’m even more grateful. #### And especially – Your Loved Ones – Your Family, the most important people in the world to you – you even threw them away for me. I cannot express in words the gratitude I have for the loyalty that you have for me. You sacrificed all these beautiful things in life just to devote yourself completely to me. But do not despair, my friend, for on me you can always depend. #### For after you have lost all these things, you can still depend on me to take even more from you. #### You can depend on me to keep you in living hell – to keep you – Mind, Body, and Soul – For I will not be satisfied until you are DEAD, my friend. #### Your Loving Friend, #### ALCOHOL --- # Media And Eating Disorders Source: https://wdrecoverycenters.com/media-and-eating-disorders/ ![](https://wdeatingdisorders.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/blog-media-and-eating-disorders.jpg) #### The influence of the media on the proliferation of eating disorders cannot be refuted. From an early age we are bombarded with images and messages that reinforce the idea to be happy and successful we must be thin. Today, you cannot read a magazine or newspaper, turn on the television, listen to the radio, or shop at the mall without being assaulted with the message that fat is bad. The most frightening part is that this destructive message is reaching kids. Adolescents often feel fatally flawed if their weight, hips, and breasts don’t match up to those of models and actors. Today even elementary school-aged children are obsessed with their weight. To illustrate the media’s obsession with thinness, try and name 5 current female television personalities who are overweight. Compare that task to naming 5 female television personalities who are underweight or at an ideal weight. Even if the argument is made that the media’s portrayal of women is just a mirror of society and not an initiator, the media still needs to take responsibility for at least perpetuating the dysfunction. The following are statistics and facts that document how obsessed we are as a society with the pursuit of thinness. #### Dieting - ### One out of three women and one out of four men are on a diet at any given time. - ### 35% of occasional dieters progress into pathological dieting. - ### Two out of five women and one out of five men would trade three to five years of their life to achieve their weight goals - ### Diet and diet-related products are a 33 billion-dollar-a-year industry - ### In 1970 the average age a girl started dieting was 14; by 1990 the average age dropped to 8 - ### One-half of 4th-grade girls are on a diet - ### 51% of nine and ten-year-old girls stated they felt better about themselves when they were adhering to a diet - ### Frequent dieting is highly correlated with depression - ### While only one out of ten high school girls is overweight, nine out of ten high school juniors and seniors diet - ### 79% of teenage girls who vomit and 73% of teenage girls who use diet pills are frequent readers of women’s health and fitness magazines. This is in contrast to less than 43% of teenage girls who do not participate in these purging methods ####   #### Body Image - ### In one study, three out of four women stated that they were overweight although only one out of four were - ### Four out of five U.S. women are dissatisfied with their appearance - ### 81% of ten-year-old girls are afraid of being fat - ### A study found that adolescent girls were more fearful of gaining weight than getting cancer, nuclear war, or losing their parents - ### Over one-half of normal-weight white adolescent girls consider themselves fat - ### Following viewing images of female fashion models, seven out of ten women felt more depressed and angrier than before viewing the images - ### When preschoolers were offered dolls identical in every respect except weight, they preferred the thin doll nine out of ten times - ### A study asked children to assign attractiveness values to pictures of children with various disabilities. The participants rated the obese child less attractive than a child in a wheelchair, a child with a facial deformity, and a child with a missing limb - ### A study found that women overestimate the size of their hips by 16% and their waists by 25%, yet the same women were able to correctly estimate the width of a box - ### In a Glamour survey, 61% of respondents said they were ashamed of their hips, 64% were ashamed of their stomachs and 72% were ashamed of their thighs - ### 30% of women chose an ideal body shape that is 20% underweight and an additional 44% chose an ideal body shape 10% underweight - ### 50% of women wear a size 14 or larger, but most standard clothing outlets cater to sizes 14 or smaller ####   #### Models - ### In 1950 mannequins closely resembled the average measurements of women. The average hip measurement of mannequins and women was 34 inches. By 1990 the average hip measurement was 37 inches, while the average mannequin's hip measured only 31 inches. - ### If today’s mannequins were actual human women, based on their theoretical body-fat percentages they would have probably ceased to menstruate. - ### The average U.S. woman is 5’4” and weighs 140 pounds. In contrast the average U.S. model is 5’11” and weighs 117 pounds. - ### Over the last three decades fashion models, Miss America contestants, and Playboy centerfolds have grown steadily thinner, while the average woman’s weight has risen. - ### Also over the last three decades, male Playgirl centerfolds have become more muscular and have less body fat, while the average man’s weight and percentage of body fat have increased. - ### Some of the pictures of the models in magazines do not exist. The pictures are computer-modified compilations of different body parts. - ### A study found that 25% of Playboy centerfolds met the weight criteria for Anorexia. - ### Twenty years ago the average fashion model weighed 8% less than the average woman. Today she weighs 23% less. - ### Kate Moss is 5’7” and weighs 95 pounds. That is 30% below the ideal body weight. - ### Supermodels Niki Taylor and Elle Macpherson also meet the Body Mass Index physical criteria for Anorexia. - ### Gisele Bundchen was Vogue’s model of the year, in part the magazine states, because she strays from the rail-thin image. Gisele is 5’11” and weighs only 115, which is 25% below her ideal body weight. ####   #### Television And Movies - ### Following the introduction of Western television in Fiji there was a surge in the rate of eating disorders - ### One out of every four television commercials sends out some sort of message about attractiveness - ### 80% of women who answered a People magazine survey responded that images of women on television and in the movies make them feel insecure - ### Actresses Julia Roberts and Cameron Diaz and singer Diana Ross all meet the Body Mass Index physical criteria for Anorexia - ### Model/Actress Elizabeth Hurley stated in Allure magazine “I’ve always thought Marilyn Monroe looked fabulous, but I’d kill myself if I was that fat.” - ### Pamela Anderson is 5’7” and weighs 120 pounds. She is supposed to be the voluptuous ideal yet she is 11% below the ideal body weight. In contrast, a generation ago Marilyn Monroe set the beauty standard at 5’5” and weighed 135 pounds. Today her agent would probably tell her she had to lose weight! ####   #### Changing society’s view cannot happen overnight, but here are a few suggestions to help you defend against negative messages: - ### Be Realistic - Women’s bodies are designed to store fat for a developing child. Those models and actors you admire starve themselves, punish themselves with extreme workouts and endure surgery to look the way they do - ### Variety is the spice of life - If we all looked the same life would be boring. Get into the uniqueness of you - ### Appreciate your body - Reestablish a positive relationship with your body. Your body is the most valuable asset you will ever own. All of Bill Gates's money could not recreate you. Begin viewing your body as an instrument and not an ornament. Learn to appreciate your body for what it can do, not for what it looks like. Make a list of those things you like about your body - ### Pamper your body - Take a long hot bath and soothe yourself. Spoil yourself by getting a massage - ### Exercise - Studies have shown that when people participate in even moderate exercise, such as walking, they feel more connected and better about their bodies - ### You can’t judge a book by its cover - There is a lot more to you than what you look like. Your appearance is not your identity. Make a list of the traits that you like. Think about the people you admire and look up to. You admire these individuals because of who they are, not because of what they look like - ### Surround yourself with support - Seek out others in your life who value you for who you are and not for what you look like. Find people who exhibit a healthy relationship with their bodies. Avoid those who tease or are constantly focusing on their weight - ### Throw away the scale - For many individuals, the number the scale reads in the morning determines what kind of day they are going to have. If the scale number is higher than they had hoped for they feel depressed and if they met their weight goal they feel elated. Constant weighing usually turns into a negative experience that leads to dissatisfaction and obsession. Many individuals have chosen to smash their scales and in the process have freed themselves from having their emotions tied to a number that has nothing at all to do with who they are - ### Mealtime equals Family time - Studies have shown that families that eat meals together have a lower occurrence of eating disorders. Making time to eat together as a complete family can be difficult with all the family’s divergent responsibilities and activities but mealtimes may be one of the most important events of the day. Mealtimes together allow family members to check in with each other, model appropriate eating behaviors and provide a forum to resolve conflict both within and outside the family - ### Be a good role model - Your children will have enough pressure from the media and peers. Try not to express dissatisfaction with your body in front of your children. Seventy-seven percent of children first learn about dieting from a family member, usually a parent. Studies have shown that parents who displayed dissatisfaction with their bodies were more likely to have children with body image disturbances when they became adults. Discuss with your children the ridiculous nature of the media’s portrayal of body image and encourage them not to buy into it. --- # Eating Disorder Source: https://wdrecoverycenters.com/eating-disorder/ ![](https://wdeatingdisorders.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/blog-eating-disorder.jpg) #### Prevalence: - ### It is estimated that 8 million Americans have an eating disorder – seven million women and one million men - ### One in 200 American women suffers from anorexia - ### Two to three in 100 American women suffers from bulimia - ### Nearly half of all Americans personally know someone with an eating disorder (Note: One in five Americans suffers from mental illnesses.) - ### An estimated 10 – 15% of people with anorexia or bulimia are males #### Mortality Rates: - ### Eating disorders have the highest mortality rate of any mental illness - ### A study by the National Association of Anorexia Nervosa and Associated Disorders reported that 5 – 10% of anorexics die within 10 years after contracting the disease; 18-20% of anorexics will be dead after 20 years and only 30 – 40% ever fully recover - ### The mortality rate associated with anorexia nervosa is 12 times higher than the death rate of ALL causes of death for females 15 – 24 years old. - ### 20% of people suffering from anorexia will prematurely die from complications related to their eating disorder, including suicide and heart problems #### Access To Treatment: - ### Only 1 in 10 people with eating disorders receive treatment - ### About 80% of the girls/women who have accessed care for their eating disorders do not get the intensity of treatment they need to stay in recovery – they are often sent home weeks earlier than the recommended stay - ### Treatment of an eating disorder in the US ranges from $500 per day to $2,000 per day. The average cost for a month of inpatient treatment is $30,000. It is estimated that individuals with eating disorders need anywhere from 3 – 6 months of inpatient care. Health insurance companies for several reasons do not typically cover the cost of treating eating disorders - ### The cost of outpatient treatment, including therapy and medical monitoring, can extend to $100,000 or more #### Adolescents: - ### Anorexia is the 3rd most common chronic illness among adolescents - ### 95% of those who have eating disorders are between the ages of 12 and 25 - ### 50% of girls between the ages of 11 and 13 see themselves as overweight - ### 80% of 13-year-olds have attempted to lose weight #### Racial And Ethnic Minorities: - ### Rates of minorities with eating disorders are similar to those of white women - ### 74% of American Indian girls reported dieting and purging with diet pills - ### Essence magazine, in 1994, reported that 53.5% of their respondents, African-American females were at risk of an eating disorder - ### Eating disorders are one of the most common psychological problems facing young women in Japan. --- # Swapping or Co-Occurring Addictions Source: https://wdrecoverycenters.com/swapping-or-co-occurring-addictions-2/ ![](https://wdeatingdisorders.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/blog-men-eating-disorder.jpg) #### Swapping or co-occurring addictions can best be understood with the following: You go from smoking to eating; from drinking to shopping; from sex to chocolate to working; from eating to exercise. You’re substituting one addiction for another in an attempt to compensate for a perceived lack of emotional needs. Tobacco use, alcohol use, illicit drug use, binge eating, gambling, Internet use, love, sex, exercise, work, cosmetic medical procedures, diet, weight loss procedures, and shopping are common addictions that can occur alone or simultaneously. #### One addiction takes the place of a previous addictive behavior to serve the same purpose. Swapping or co-occurring addictions aim to serve the same purpose as the original addiction. Often you will substitute one addiction for another before, during, or after beginning the recovery process from your original addiction. #### Beginning a recovery process, you begin to have feelings about a present or past situation you have not been able to express or talk about. Giving up eating disorder behaviors, substance use, or alcohol use tends to start to feel something they need to get some relief to “feel better”. The Eating Disorder person will typically begin to, exercise, shop, or look for ways to release the pressure. Some people retain feelings, stress, or muscle tension in parts of their body causing pain, disease, muscle aches, or stomach bloating. They are typically bottling up the feelings inside. Do many people feel like they are to become addicts and struggle for life, battling a never-ending cycle of recovery and relapse? Many of you have seen people gain and lose weight; drink and stop drinking, and smoke and stop smoking. The cycle goes on and on. The goal is to start to express the underlying emotions verbally without suppressing the feelings with the addictions. #### Some beliefs are that once you have had one addiction, you’re at greater risk of developing another addiction or what we call swapping or co-occurring. There is no single set of characteristics that people who become addicted have, but there are some that are more common among people with addictions. #### A recovering alcoholic may turn to food as a source of reward and pleasure. The relationship with alcohol was substituted with food which could develop into a substitute addiction. Many Alcohol addicts feel this may be a safer addiction to have, but it is still damaging. #### In the binge-eating world, there has been a dramatic rise in bariatric surgeries. Once they lose weight, they end up with new or swapping food addictions for alcohol, gambling addiction, sex addiction, internet addiction, love, or compulsive shopping. Former Binge Eating individuals may use drugs and often engage in other activities as a replacement for a binge eating food addiction. #### At WD Recovery and Wellness we understand you. We help you learn not to substitute one addiction for another during or after the recovery process. #### We help you get to the core of what drives your addiction which is your key to lasting recovery. We educate you about the dangers of swapping or co-occurring, at the beginning of your recovery with our treatment processes. #### We help you take an active role in your recovery by learning how to identify triggers; Identify, manage, and change the core thoughts and feelings that are part of addictive thinking patterns. Our team will help you recover and heal preventing relapse, co-occurring, or swapping of your addictions. --- # Body Image Obsession Source: https://wdrecoverycenters.com/body-image-obsession/ ![](https://wdeatingdisorders.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/blog-body-image-obsession.jpg) #### Individuals suffering from eating disorders frequently have negative feelings about their bodies and are overly concerned about their body size and weight. They may participate in certain behaviors and hold particular beliefs that negatively reinforce a poor body image. The following is a partial list of some of the signs and symptoms of being overly affected by body image. - ### Thoughts about “feeling fat” - ### Feeling shameful and guilty about your body - ### Is done on purpose, with an intent to cause harm - ### Avoidance of social situations that emphasize physical appearance - ### Looking at others to see how your body size compares to others #### Weight determines how good you feel about yourself: - ### What you weigh affects your relationships - ### Pinching of body parts to measure fatness - ### Checking reflection in glass windows to see how your body looks - ### Having special clothes that are used to make sure your body is a certain size - ### Having clothes that do not fit to entice self to lose weight - ### Touching underneath the chin to check for a “double chin” #### Feeling you can not give a speech or make a presentation based on the way you look: - ### Missing school based on feeling you have gained weight #### Checking the diameter of the wrist for size maintenance: - ### Missing school based on feeling you have gained weight - ### Asking others about weight to compare your weight to others - ### Asking others about clothing size to compare your clothing size to others - ### Attempting to elicit comments from others about how fat you are - ### Embarrassment about body weight - ### Checking to see how close thighs are together when standing up - ### Checking for cellulite in thighs - ### Sucking in your stomach in front of a mirror to see what it looks like - ### Preferring to only wear baggy clothes - ### Pinching of cheeks to measure fatness - ### Difficulty undressing in front of a spouse or other loved ones - ### Comparing own body to people on television, in movies, and magazines - ### Checking to see if body parts giggle - ### Checking to see if rings still fit as in the past - ### Checking to make sure the same belt hole is used as in the past - ### Checking to see if you can feel your bones - ### Weighing of self multiple times - ### Fear of weighing oneself - ### Making negative comments about your body to others - ### Difficulty taking compliments from others about the way you look --- # Bullying is a precursor for developing eating disorders, alcohol abuse, and substance abuse Source: https://wdrecoverycenters.com/bullying-is-a-precursor-for-developing-eating-disorders-alcohol-abuse-and-substance-abuse/ ![](https://wdeatingdisorders.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/blog-bullying.jpg) #### Adults, teens, and adolescents who bully or are being bullied are at higher risk for a wide range of problems, including abusing alcohol, drugs, and eating disorders. They even risk having problems into adulthood, PTSD, eating disorders, self-harm (e.g. Cutting, burning, and hair pulling), and multiple substance use. Although we “vividly remember” what it “feels” like being in school and being “BULLIED”. Many parents, teachers, law enforcement, and others do not understand or underestimate the amount of bullying that still takes place at school, at home, in the workplace, on the internet, on Facebook, and on texting. #### Individuals bully what they do not understand. Many kids and adults are bullied at home and often become the bully at school and in the workplace. The person who is bullying is using abuse and control over others as an attempt to have some control over their feelings outside their home. #### "I remember not getting help with my words, the fear, the anger, and the emotional pain. I felt hurt, scared, and alone". Teachers blamed me saying "You must have done something to make them mad at you" or "you need to stand up for yourself". I was not safe at home, at school, or anywhere. So I felt hopeless and helpless, and all I could think of is how to make it stop. "I wanted to disappear to make it all better". I felt like I was the problem. I began to feel like I should not be here anymore. "I began to think of ways I could no longer suffer or die". How many times have you felt this way? How many of you still feel bullied or are bullied in your adult life at work, in social settings, and in college? Bullying at work can seem passive with the threats, fear, and intimidation of "boss just cares about me" or "coercing you to do something against your beliefs". ### Bullying and its consequences: #### Bullying is intentional negative behavior that is repeated and involves an imbalance of social, mental, emotional, or physical power. An easier way to say it is Bullying is and feels unfair and one-sided. It happens when someone keeps intimidating, making fun of you, hurting, putting you down, frightening, threatening, or leaving someone out of activities on purpose. #### In other words, bullying is any kind of physical or verbal abuse that: - ### Happens more than once - ### The victim is unable to, or afraid to, defend him or herself - ### Is done on purpose, with an intent to cause harm #### The types of bullying behaviors include but are not limited to Internet or Cyberbullying, physical threats, physical aggression, relational aggression, and Identity-based bullying (sexual orientation, gay, lesbian, transgendered; religion, sports, contest, pageants, and academic competing). No matter the form or expression of bullying is intended to coerce, intimidate and cause physical, mental, or emotional harm to any person, student, or worker. #### Simply put, the types of bullying include: - ### Physical attacks may include but are not limited to shoving into lockers, punching, or kicking - ### Verbal attacks are demonstrated by calling names, making cruel remarks, or “making fun” of someone - ### Social attacks through spreading rumors, sabotaging friendships, or deliberately excluding others - ### Online attacks, or cyberbullying via texting, emailing, or posting on a website anything cruel, untrue, or otherwise harmful about a person ### What it does: #### The targets of bullying (Adolescents, Teens, and Adults) and Bullies (the person harming) have adverse socio-emotional implications from any form of bullying behavior which lead to feelings: Depression, anxiety, aggression against others, or self, low self-esteem, psychosomatic feelings, lowering academic performance, skipping school, increase in illnesses to stay home, fear, thoughts of death (suicidal thoughts) or thoughts of hurting others (homicidal behavior) just to stop the “emotional hurt” the victim feels inside. People who are bullied often blame themselves for the behaviors; accept the behavior as being ok or “they are not doing it on purpose”. Bullies often displace their internal anger and or sadness verbally or physically onto someone or something else to feel better about themselves. People who often engage in bullying behaviors escalate to adult delinquent behaviors that are often criminal without treatment. #### Adults, teens, and adolescents who are bullied report having more physical health complaints and engaging in higher levels of problem behaviors, such as smoking, drugs, alcohol abuse, self-harm (eg. Cutting, burning, and hair pulling), eating disorders, oppositional defiant behaviors, dissociative disorders (annihilating their identities), and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). They, too, can face problems into adulthood, including depression, anxiety, sadness, and loneliness. #### Bystanders also suffer an increased risk of alcohol, food, or other drugs, have increased mental health problems like anxiety, depression, and PTSD depending on the abuse witnessed, and are more likely to miss or skip school. --- # Post Trauma Anger Source: https://wdrecoverycenters.com/post-trauma-anger/ ![](https://wdeatingdisorders.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/blog-post-trauma-anger.jpg) #### Post-traumatic anger becomes maladaptive interfering with individuals’ ability to adapt and or cope. Anger is a fundamental and safe core emotion of a child or adult survivor’s response to trauma because of the betrayal and losing basic trust. Anger is a core feature of the trauma survival response in men and women. Therefore, anger is a safe and less vulnerable feeling that can be expressed as an emotion helping individuals cope with vulnerable and fearful situations. #### WD Recovery and Wellness Center explains how anger and trauma are connected to an individual's natural survival instinct. When an individual is initially confronted with a threat, anger is a normal response that covers over her. Childhood abuse is a terrorizing situation that often becomes a repeated situation. Anger is a normal response to situations of terror, situations that seem unfair, and the feelings of "feeling out of control". individuals may use alcohol and drugs, food, exercise, hair pulling, sex, and self-harm to reduce uncomfortable feelings and memories. Learning distress tolerance as opposed escape and avoidance patterns away from uncomfortable feelings. Being PRESENT at the moment is key to recovery. #### Anger becomes the controlling thought which is a "fixed or stuck feeling" as a protective response in men and women with childhood trauma. With early childhood trauma, the abuse interferes with an individual’s ability to self-regulate emotions. Feelings become perceived as vulnerable. The vulnerable feelings need protection. Anger covers the individual as a safe but uncomfortable feeling in which a trauma victim can express Anger as a safe and self-protective emotion. Vulnerable situations can be perceived as "threats" becoming “fixed or covered over by the individual’s thoughts with automatic reactive responses” in persons with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. #### Individuals, combat military personnel including navy seals who have Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) often, describe feeling an increased internal activation. The anger can become “fixed or stuck” as the normal level of arousal can intensify the actual psychological, emotional, and physical experience of anger. The arousal often can cause men and women with PTSD to feel constantly on edge, hyped-up, or irritable and can cause individuals to be more easily provoked. It is common for traumatized individuals to seek out situations that require them to stay alert and defend themselves from actual or potential danger. Again, individuals may use alcohol and drugs, food, exercise, hair pulling, sex, and self-harm to reduce and dispel overall internal tension and arousal. #### In early childhood abuse, post-traumatic anger becomes maladaptive in which individuals recognize the anger as a protective. The physical, emotional, or sexual traumatic event interferes with an individual’s ability to self-regulate emotions, which leads to frequent episodes of labile or out-of-control emotions of anger and rage. --- # Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and Substance Abuse Source: https://wdrecoverycenters.com/post-traumatic-stress-disorder-ptsd-and-substance-abuse/ ![](https://wdeatingdisorders.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/blog-ptsd-substance-abuse.jpg) #### Individuals, who have Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) often, feel an increased internal activation of anger. WD Recovery and Wellness treatment programs typically incorporate many treatment modalities, each directed toward healing. Substance treatments must help each person define abstinence, stop using substances, and reintegrate into many aspects of community living. --- # Feelings Source: https://wdrecoverycenters.com/feelings/ ![](https://wdeatingdisorders.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/blog-feelings.jpg) #### WD Recovery Recovery and Wellness stress feelings for several reasons. First, your behavior in the past may have been so opposed to your value system that considerable feelings of remorse and self-loathing may have manifested. We often accumulate a pool of negative feelings and try to protect ourselves by hiding these feelings with a variety of masks or defenses that prevent their discovery. This can begin with mild disapproval, then growing remorse, and ultimately a deep self-loathing. Statements such as: "I'm no good!" or "The world would be better off without me” reflect these negative feelings and attitudes. #### Admitting feelings is important in taking the First Step of the program where you begin to look at the destruction the eating disorder has caused. #### Being in touch with the hostile feelings we have toward ourselves and the sense of helplessness and hopelessness that accompany them make the First Step a moving description instead of simply an abstract theory. We feel powerlessness and unmanageability. One of the important functions of the group is to help us identify the defenses that prevent this discovery. --- # Group Therapy Source: https://wdrecoverycenters.com/group-therapy/ ![](https://wdeatingdisorders.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/blog-group-therapy.jpg) #### The purpose of this section is to discuss the assumptions and techniques we use in conducting group therapy. To begin with, let's look at some of the similarities within our group. In addition to an eating disorder, each member of the group has two things in common. First, before you came to the point of seeking outside help, you probably tried a do-it-yourself program to change. The second similarity is that it wasn't working. The basic assumption of group therapy is that a major reason for this failure is that our most determined efforts cannot change what we cannot see and that there is a great deal that we are not seeing clearly. #### The purpose of this section is to discuss the assumptions and techniques we use in conducting group therapy. Emotions are important in all people, males and females. Feelings are expressed as emotions and are a part of subjective human functioning responses to feelings in various situations. Emotions are linked to pleasure or pain and have either positive or negative characteristics. Emotions are ways to effectuate coping. Basic emotions include fear, anger, happiness, and sadness. Over time, individuals develop an innate response to fear. Once a person has been exposed to a fearful situation, the image becomes fixed in the individual’s memory. #### Repeated exposure to painful situations will cause a fear response in children, men, and women. Fear is felt inside the body in the form of anxiety, with the anxiety normally acting as a warning system in your body. With repeated exposure to the fearful situation, the individual will develop a form of a habituated coping response such as drinking alcohol, substance use, alcohol use, binging, purging, exercising, restriction of certain food groups, sex, and gambling. These coping responses are like reflexes in response to the fixed cues of anxiety and fear within the body calming the mind and body. #### Anxiety is linked to emotional vulnerability. When anxiety is provoked in arousal situations; the arousal causes the individual to experience fear, leading to sensitivity to fear. After the arousal and fear response, anticipatory anxiety causes the individual to access “fixed beliefs” regarding the anxiety, which are harmful elicited fixed responses. The individual believes that the anxiety is harmful and develops a “lower order” ability to cope with the immediate distress, causing him or her to engage in eating disorders, substance abuse, self-harm, and dissociations to modulate the negative emotions. Fear is directly related to bodily responses. Dissociations are a way of disavowing painful memories and emotions or distancing the self from the emotions. #### Often adults will deny any history of sexual abuse and or physical abuse to distance themselves from anxiety and emotions. The long-term core symptoms of sexual abuse include but are not limited to feelings of shame, low self-esteem, worthlessness, anxiety, guilt, hopelessness, and self-blame. Traumatic abuse can act as a psychological stressor that predisposes its victims to addictions. #### A history of sexual and/or physical abuse is a psychological precursor to the development of an eating disorder, substance abuse, and dissociative disorders and increases the likelihood of developing depression related to avoidance of emotions. Abuse can severely affect an individual’s life, causing severe and long-term suffering. #### The physical symptoms become emotional scars that are felt in the pelvis, thighs, rectum, penis, and vagina, with the abdominal area becoming the area of focus for sensations of tension and stress. As an example of avoiding negative feelings, individuals with eating disorders often become obsessed with making their abdomens concave or flat while displacing their painful emotions. The painful emotions are attributed to feelings of fatness, the pursuit of thinness, and the punishment of the body for failing. The act of losing weight becomes the focus of regaining control over their bodies to distract themselves from and often forget about the rape. #### The emotions become attached to the fat stomach and an effort to lose weight. After a time, when anorexic patients start to gain weight due to pressure from families, friends, and treatment, individuals can learn to attach the feeling to food and purge the food to eliminate the negative feelings. The act of purging gives individuals a sense of control over their bodies in having accomplished something. The feelings from the trauma become displaced onto the food, where starvation or not being hungry, binging and purging, or simply binging becomes the problem that is associated with the original traumatic feelings. --- # Nutrition for Eating Disorders, Alcohol, and Substance Abuse Source: https://wdrecoverycenters.com/nutrition-for-eating-disorders-alcohol-and-substance-abuse/ ![](https://wdeatingdisorders.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/blog-nutrition-for-eating-disorder.jpg) #### Our experience has shown us that at the time they enter the program, many individuals are out of control with food. Decision-making in regard to obtaining food, portion control, calories, exercise, weight, and body image is often distorted. Even though the relationship with food is dysfunctional, compulsive behavior provides the individual with predictability and comfort at a time when their lives may be feeling out of control. In essence, eating patterns become a survival mechanism, a way to cope. Many individuals are locked into a fearful cycle with food. For these reasons, we work with individuals to gain their trust which will enable them to begin turning their food and weight control over to the care of the program. #### We understand that this may be frightening, but we commit to each individual that we will not allow her or his weight to swing to either extreme. We encourage open discussion of feelings about these matters with the staff and peers. The staff’s responsibility is not to police food intake or to force individuals to do something that they do not wish to do. Instead, we ask individuals to be willing to follow and trust our guidelines and to share with us when they are having difficulty. The inability to control alcohol or substance abuse intake is an addictive illness that affects about 5 percent of heavy alcohol and substance abuse individuals, as well as their families and friends. The physical effects of this type of compulsive drinking and substance abuse include severe nutritional deficiencies which are typically aggravated by the alcohol and substance abuser increasing disregard for his/her dietary needs. #### Excessive alcohol intake in a person's diet leads to an increased risk of cirrhosis and cancer of the liver. About 20 percent of all heavy drinkers contract cirrhosis of the liver, of whom about 20 percent die of liver cancer. In addition, alcoholism significantly increases the risk of cancer of the throat, esophagus, and stomach, and may contribute to cancer of the breast and colon. #### A healthy diet helps to retard the development of diseases for an eating disorder, alcohol, and substance abuse individuals and strengthen the body's defenses against further serious diseases. #### Excessive alcohol consumption overloads the liver adversely affecting its ability to store fat-soluble vitamins (eg. vitamins A, D, E) and metabolize protein. In addition, alcohol-abusing individuals often have low levels of the following essential nutrients: calcium, folate, magnesium, thiamin (vitamin B1), riboflavin (vitamin B2), niacin (vitamin B3), and zinc. The best diet for alcoholics should address these dietary deficiencies thus helping to repair the damage done as well as strengthening the body for the future. #### The active alcohol and substance user often typically consumes 50 percent or more of his or her total calories in the form of alcohol. The remaining calories are often in the form of junk foods: empty calories that deplete the body’s stores of essential nutrients. #### When it comes to the health of a recovering eating disorder, addict/alcoholic, the approach of natural foods can positively alter the course of treatment — and definitively increase chances of getting recovery and staying sober. #### WD Recovery and Wellness believes proper diet, along with targeted vitamin supplementation through food, can work miracles in the lives of early recovery. Individuals often don’t think of vegetables and fruits as sources of complex carbohydrates but they are some of the best we have available. All of this fiber helps cut alcohol cravings. Proper and adequate intake of fats is essential for the absorption of vitamins and nutrients and cellular repair. #### WD Recovery and Wellness Center urges people in recovery to eat nothing artificial to ease the load on the liver, pancreas, and gastrointestinal system which has to struggle to break down chemicals and preservatives. Foods should be as close to their natural state as possible. WD Recovery and Wellness Center have found great success in cutting alcohol cravings by eliminating common food allergens, most notably wheat and dairy. #### B vitamins are essential for eating disorders, and alcohol and drug recovery. Foods that are natural rather than Supplementing with vitamin B1 (thiamine) are essential, ensuring proper brain function and decreasing fatigue, brain fog, and poor memory. Wernickie-Korsakoff syndrome, or alcoholic encephalopathy, is a pronounced form of thiamin deficiency. Research has shown that vitamin B3, or niacin, helps alcoholics detox from alcohol. Vitamin B5, or pantothenic acid, helps support adrenal function and also helps rid the body of alcohol. For the recovering alcoholic suffering from insomnia and anxiety, vitamin B6, pyridoxine, is crucial for the production of serotonin and melatonin. Commonly, I give my recovering addicts/alcoholics a high-quality B-complex supplement, along with vitamin A and vitamin C, which they are usually deficient in. #### It’s our goal, as a wellness and recovery center to facilitate a physical recovery so that the emotional, mental, and spiritual aspects of recovery have a better chance of succeeding. Food is a crucial medicine in restoring this balance of health. The sooner a newly sober and abstinent person feels great, I’ve found, the sooner he or she will begin to accept a life free of crippling attachments to substances, binging, purging, and restricting behaviors — the life they are truly meant to live. #### This is why we have teamed up with De’Lite Healthy Eating. WD Recovery fell in love with their philosophy on food and nutrition as the “Marriage of convenient and health”. “The imbalance of calories and chemically made products contribute to negative impacts on the body. D’Lites’ meals include the use of high quality, nutritious products, which are cooked with healthy methods”. --- # Swapping or Co-Occurring Addictions Source: https://wdrecoverycenters.com/swapping-or-co-occurring-addictions/ ![](https://wdeatingdisorders.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/blog-swapping-addictions-cooccurring-addictions.jpg) #### Swapping or co-occurring addictions can best be understood with the following: You go from smoking to eating; from drinking to shopping; from sex to chocolate to working; from eating to exercise. Many Alcohol addicts feel this may be a safer addiction to have, however, it is still damaging. --- # Athletes’ Eating Disorders Source: https://wdrecoverycenters.com/athletes-eating-disorders/ ![](https://wdeatingdisorders.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/blog-athlete-eating-disorder.jpg) #### Athletes and dancers may face a greater risk for the development of an eating disorder, substance use, and alcohol disorders. The incidence of eating disorders among athletes continues to be on the rise, especially for those involved in sports that emphasize being thin. It is estimated that up to 62 percent of females who participate in “appearance sports” such as gymnastics, figure skating, dancing, and diving are suffering from an active eating disorder. High incidence of eating disorders also occur in endurance sports that emphasize low body weights such as running, cycling, and cross-country skiing; sports that have weight classifications such as wrestling, horse racing, and crew; and sports where the clothing is revealing such as swimming, volleyball, track, cheerleading, and bodybuilding. #### Many of the attributes that are part of the formula for a successful athlete may predispose them to the development of an eating disorder, substance use, and Alcohol Use. Athletes’ personalities tend towards being perfectionist, overachieving, competitive, compulsive, and people-pleasing. These traits, when focused on the body can have devastating consequences. Athletes and often their coaches are preoccupied with controlling body weight and shape to enhance athletic performance. Weigh-ins and body fat analyses are often a weekly occurrence. The worst part is that these activities are usually done in a public setting with personal weights revealed to the entire team and staff. This can cause embarrassment and foster competition among team members to obtain the lowest weight through dangerous dieting methods. Teammates and coaches are significant people in athletes’ lives and can have an inordinate amount of influence. A recent study reported that 75 percent of gymnasts who were told by their coaches that they needed to lose weight resorted to dangerous weight control measures. #### Judges in sports where athletes are evaluated on technical and artistic forms have admitted they consider thinness to be an important factor in deciding excellence and have even told athletes they should lose weight to achieve their athletic goals. This was the case with the elite gymnast Christy Henrich, who stated that a United States gymnastics judge told her she was too fat and needed to lose weight if she wanted to make the Olympic team. Christy felt this statement was the impetus for her to severely restrict her food intake in order to make weight. At the age of 22, Christy Henrich died as a result of her eating disorder. When their bodies are being constantly assessed personally and by coaches, judges, and spectators, it is understandable why so many athletes fall prey to disordered eating. #### When athletes diet, they often go to extraordinary lengths to reduce their percentage of body fat. Severely restrictive dieting is the most common method, but many also engage in the purging methods of vomiting, laxative abuse and diuretic abuse. Restricting food intake can result in fatigue, dizziness, muscle wasting, stress fractures, depleted food stores, weakness, and fainting. Initially competitive performance may be unaffected but ultimately the athlete’s performance and health will significantly decline. Because of the addictive nature of eating disorders, even though their performance may be suffering, many eating disordered athletes find it difficult to stop their disordered eating. #### Long-term and serious medical complications include cardiac problems and what is known as the “Female Athlete Triad”. The Triad refers to disordered eating, loss of menses, and osteoporosis. The resulting medical complications are often permanent and irreversible. Bone loss starts as soon as six months from loss of menstruation. A study found that anorexics were seven times as likely to develop stress fractures as a result of their bone density loss. This not only has immediate consequences on their performance but also long-term consequences such as chronic joint problems and increased risk of fractures for the rest of their lives. #### Coaches, parents, teammates, and friends need to be alert to the early signs of eating disorders among athletes. Often, the eating disorder is well concealed, and the symptoms are misinterpreted as athletic burnout. Warning signs include: - #### Restrictive dieting - #### Purging through vomiting, diuretics, or laxatives - #### Withdrawal from teammates - #### Chronic fatigue - #### Excessive exercise outside of routine training periods - #### Inability to complete workouts - #### Weight loss - #### Loss of menses - #### Loss of concentration - #### Changes in mood - #### Fainting - #### Light-headedness - #### Decreased stamina #### Because of the unique situation and influence of coaches, athletic trainers, and teammates, they can help prevent eating disorders among athletes. To accomplish prevention, the following should be kept in mind: - #### Recognize and educate athletes on the symptoms and warning signs of eating disorders. - #### Educate athletes on the physical risks of maintaining low body weight. - #### Do not overplay the impact of weight on athletic performance. - #### Promote total and healthy nutrition. - #### Eliminate public weigh-ins and body-fat analyses. - #### Provide a resource for emotional counseling. - #### Eliminate ridiculing or flippant remarks about body shape or weight. - #### Set realistic goals, taking into account the individual athlete’s body type and shape. - #### Recognize when healthy training regimens turn into obsessive regimens. - #### Encourage positive self-image and self-esteem. #### Participation in sports can have an extremely positive effect on the development and maturing of an individual. It can promote the ability to work as a member of a team, teach perseverance, and enhance goal attainment. With the right emphasis coaches, athletic trainers, and teammates can promote emotional as well as physical health. --- # PTSD – Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Source: https://wdrecoverycenters.com/ptsd-post-traumatic-stress-disorder/ ![](https://wdeatingdisorders.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/blog-ptsd-post-traumatic-stress-disorder.jpg) #### Post-traumatic anger becomes maladaptive interfering with individuals’ ability to adapt and or cope. When an individual is initially confronted with a threat, anger is a normal response that covers you. Childhood abuse is a terrorizing situation that often becomes a repeated situation. Anger is a normal response to situations of terror, situations that seem unfair, and the feelings of "feeling out of control". #### Feelings become perceived as vulnerable. It is common for traumatized individuals to actually seek out situations that require them to stay alert and defend against actual or potential danger. #### Again, individuals often use alcohol and drugs, food, exercise, sex, gambling, and self-harm to reduce and dispel overall internal tension and arousal – "to feel better". The physical or sexual traumatic event interferes with an individual’s ability to self-regulate emotions, which leads to frequent episodes of labile or out-of-control emotions of anger and rage. --- # Emotional Expression Source: https://wdrecoverycenters.com/emotional-expression/ ![](https://wdeatingdisorders.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/blog-emotional-expression.jpg) #### People suffering from trauma and having eating disorders, alcohol addictions, and substance addictions are closely correlated. Many studies have shown that people who struggle with eating disorders, substance abuse, alcohol use, and drug use, self-harming, and gambling have a higher incidence of physical and emotional neglect and sexual abuse. In particular, binge-eating disorders and compulsive eating disorders have been connected to emotional abuse, and males with eating disorders have been correlated with sexual abuse. Individuals with an underlying trauma may experience chronic relapses into eating, alcohol, and substance abuse disorders with repeated. #### hospitalizations due to many programs and professionals who do not have the knowledge or understanding of the issues related to successful recovery treatment. Many of the programs are referred to as “Patient Mills” that focus on monetary issues of expensive urine testing, groups that have no real benefit, and providers that focus on medications as opposed to real outcomes. These relapses are often blamed on the addictive disorders or one’s body until the underlying trauma or core issues are addressed. #### This is why the use of integrative therapies, especially a creative therapy approach, is essential. For many finding or saying the right words may prove hard. The human mind is complex. A traumatic childhood can manifest itself in many different ways in later years. Recovery can be challenging with long-term consequences. #### We guide and help you use integrative creative therapy in a safe and supportive therapeutic environment. You use creativity to explore your thoughts and sensations as you work to identify and regulate feelings of distress. Creativity facilitates the development of new insight and associations between eating disorders, alcohol addictions, and substance addictions surrounding past experiences. #### Once your issues are identified and treated simultaneously, you accept and define abstinence as a lasting recovery is more than possible—IT HAPPENS. --- # Recovering During the COVID-19 Pandemic Source: https://wdrecoverycenters.com/recovering-during-the-covid-19-pandemic/ https://youtu.be/d8XL98i1PuM --- #### Following guidelines from the Joint Commission and the Centers for Disease Control, we have implemented extreme measures to guarantee social distancing and proper sanitation of our recovery center.
